Case Study - Angela Grant
Angela Grant is a 48-year-old, hardworking, single mother with a teenage daughter. She understood that making ends meet on her income was difficult, but she knew she could always count on the fact that she was healthy. However, that changed dramatically last September, and she worried about what the holiday season would hold for her and her daughter. Angela started experiencing chest pain, and felt her heart racing. She knew something was terribly wrong, and went by ambulance to the emergency room. There, after many tests, the doctors diagnosed her with a serious heart condition called “atrial fibrillation.” To make matters worse, Angela was also diagnosed with diabetes, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol. Just one of these conditions can be dangerous for someone with a heart condition. Put all of these together - and Angela’s heart was at serious risk. Without continuous care from a physician, and proper medication, not only were the coming holidays with her daughter in jeopardy, but her entire future.
Angela spent five days in the hospital, was discharged with serious medical problems, and was left holding eleven prescriptions. Then the grim reality set in. Angela had no health care insurance. With the need to find continuous medical care, and eleven important medications to keep her alive, she had some tough choices to make. She tried to determine what she and her daughter “could do without in order to afford her medications and health care.” But with her meager salary, there was little she could cut out from her living expenses. Angela was in serious trouble.
A year later, Angela is feeling much better now that she is able to see a doctor regularly and receive all of her needed medications. Angela and her daughter will enjoy this holiday season with peace of mind because of the generosity of the donors and volunteers at Lakeland Volunteers in Medicine. Angela expressed her gratitude by sending a heart felt “thank you” letter to LVIM. In her letter Angela says, “I am so grateful to LVIM for providing the lifesaving care and medications I need to survive.”
