What is The Lakeland Derby?

The Lakeland Derby is an annual “Derby Style” event staged on beautiful Lake Mirror in downtown Lakeland. With the entertaining flair of the event and the competitive spirit of the race, the Derby always promises to be a memorable occasion for all.

The Lakeland Derby captures the thrill of a race and the purity of sports entertainment in a hometown setting. The true essence of the Derby is the reward of knowing the proceeds will support Lakeland Volunteers in Medicine. The Derby features ten beautifully hand-crafted swan paddle boats in a thrilling race to the finish line.

Why swan boat races?

Lakeland has a wealth of lakes and is fortunate to have an abundance of swans that populate our lovely city. What could be more fun than celebrating our lakes and city’s feathered icon by providing a family oriented outdoor event? What is “The Super Ticket”?

The Super Ticket is an extraordinary opportunity to win one of ten exclusive prizes. Super Tickets are sold prior to and during the night of the event. Winners are drawn from a barrel at the main stage throughout the evening (you do not need to be present to win).

Can I purchase more than one Super Ticket?

The more you buy, the better your chances!

Do I need to be present to win my Super Ticket prize?

No, you do not need to be present to win, however, it’s so much more exciting if you are!

Who can own/ride a swan?

Only Triple Crown sponsors will be able to own/ride a swan in the main Derby race. As part of their sponsorship, they may designate their own jockeys for the race.

How do I get to The Lakeland Derby?

The Lakeland Derby will be held on Lake Mirror, which is just east of downtown Lakeland.

What time does The Lakeland Derby start?

Gates open at 5:30 P.M. The Lakeland Derby begins with a parade to the post at 7:15 P.M. The swan race begins at 7:30 P.M.

Is there anything after the races? When does it finish?

Yes, live music will entertain the race goers immediately following the three races in the natural amphitheater by Lake Mirror. We invite you to stay and enjoy the music because the night will conclude with a fireworks display at 9:30 P.M.!

Will food and beverages be available?

Yes, concessions will be available throughout the event to satisfy your hunger and thirst.

Where should I park?

Public parking will be available in the Lakeland Electric parking garage and also on the east side of the Lake Mirror Complex. Valet parking is available for Sponsors only in the Magnolia Building parking lot.

Can I bring a camera or cell phone?

Yes, you are welcome to bring cameras and cell phones to the event.

Is the event family appropriate?

Yes, The Lakeland Derby takes great pride in providing fun for all ages.

What happens if it rains?

As is the case with any outdoor event, if lightning should arise you should seek shelter in your vehicle.
